January: National Hobby Month
January in the Northern hemisphere is cold, wet, and often covered in snow, making it perfect for hobbies like baking, learning a new language, or ice fishing.
Hobbies are any activity or interest done outside of one’s usual job. The main purpose is enjoyment. The word “hobby” comes from a 13th century term that referred to a small horse or pony. Around the 1500s, it came to describe a toy horse, a hobbyhorse. This evolved into the modern sense of a hobby being a favored pastime.
Hobbies range from fishing, playing sports, photography, and gardening to writing poetry, doing puzzles, knitting, and collecting stamps. Engaging in hobbies is a great way to relax, reduce anxiety, and improve concentration.
Celebrate your favorite hobby this month; share it with friends by having a hobby party, or research different hobbies with your children and select a new one to try.
