February 05: Primrose Day

primrose day

The red primrose is dedicated to St. Agatha, a virgin martyr, and patroness of Malta. February 5th is her feast day.

According to legend, she rejected the advances of a Roman prefect. He retaliated by persecuting her for her Christian faith. She was imprisoned and tortured. Then, she was sentenced to death by being burned at the stake. However, due to an earthquake, this did not happen and she died in prison.

Agatha’s patronage includes bell-founders, breast cancer, breast disease, earthquakes, eruptions of Mount Etna, fire, fire prevention, jewelers, martyrs, natural disasters, nurses, rape victims, sterility, and torture victims.

There is a different Primrose Day on April 19 that honors British statesman and prime minister Benjamin Disraeli.
