On March 19, the swallows return to San Juan Capistrano. Cliff Swallows migrate annually between Argentina and the Mission San Juan Capistrano, California, USA. The swallows are said to leave on October 23, the former feast day of St. John of Capistrano.
The city of San Juan Capistrano celebrates with an annual Swallows’ Day Parade, live mariachi music, Flamenco dance performances, street vendors selling churros and other goodies, ringing the historic bells, and other festive activities.
Fewer swallows are returning to the Mission. It is believed this has to do with increased development of the area.
The 1940 hit song “When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano”, written by Leon René, is a love song centering on these annual events.
