June 14: Flag Day

Flag Day

Flag Day is celebrated in the United States to commemorate the adoption of the stars and stripe flag. On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution which stated: “Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day. In August 1946, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.

There are parades in Fairfield, Washington; Appleton, Wisconsin; Quincy, Massachusetts; and Troy, New York as well as other cities. Flags are flown on all government buildings and many people display flags at home.
