The jonquil or daffodil comes in many colors. Narcissus is the botanical name for the jonquil (and several other specimens). It has a cluster of flowers on each stem while the typically narcissus has only one. There are at least 25 species of daffodils with over 13,000 hybrids. The meanings include conceit and egotism. It is the symbol of winter and the Chinese symbol of good fortune. The color associated with March is yellow; its meaning is desire, affection and affection returned.
Queen Anne’s favorite flower was the jonquil and the blossoms were incorporated into many of her needlework pieces.
Superstition dictates that if you point at a jonquil with your index finger it will not bloom.
