February 17th is National Cafe au Lait Day.
Café au lait is French for “coffee with milk”. The same drink is called caffé latte* in Italy, café con leche in Spain, and café com leite in Portugal and Brazil. Though technically there are differences (usually the vessel it is served it).
It is made with a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio of espresso (or dark roast brewed coffee) to hot milk or half-n-half. The coffee and the milk are added to the cup at the same time.
Are you going to have a café au lait today?
*Lattes use espresso whereas cafés au lait are generally made with strong coffee.
