January: National Oatmeal Month

According to the Quaker Oats Company, Americans bought enough oatmeal in January 1999 to make 470 million bowls. That’s a great, given that oatmeal promotes heart health. The soluble fiber in oatmeal helps lower LDL, the “bad” cholesterol, and helps control blood sugar. Oatmeal may also reduce blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease.

In the United States, the preferred ways of eating oatmeal are as a breakfast porridge and in cookies. Popular ways to top off a bowl of breakfast oatmeal is with butter, milk, sugar (brown or white), and fruit.

Some creative ways to eat oatmeal include:

  • adding peanut butter to the oatmeal,
  • hiding a spoonful of jelly at the bottom of the bowl,
  • adding spices and nuts,
  • adding yogurts,
  • and adding cocoa powder.

If you prefer a chewier, nuttier oatmeal, use steel-cut oats also known as Scottish or Irish oats.
