Root_Beer_FloatJune 10th is National Black Cow Day.  A Black Cow, sometime called a Brown Cow, is a root beer float – A drink made with scoops of vanilla ice cream and root beer.

Regional varieties include:

  • vanilla ice cream and root beer
  • chocolate ice cream and root beer (Chocolate Cow or Brown Cow)
  • ice cream with cola
  • ice cream and root beer blended together

This summer treat is often credited to Frank J. Wisner, owner of Cripple Creek Brewing. “Legend has it while peering out the window at the snow-capped peak of Cow Mountain, Wisner combined a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream with Myers Avenue Red root beer. And later, instead of using root beer, he used cola and the Black Cow Mountain drink was born. Children shortened the name to Black Cow and the rest, as they say, is history.” [1]

Making a Black Cow is easy. Pour root beer (or cola) into a glass until half full. Add scoops of ice cream. Then top off with more root beer. Add a long spoon and a straw. —Always add the root beer first  or you will have too much foam and not enough drink.
