January 14th is National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day.
Pastrami is a popular deli meat. There’s no standard for preparing this meat, but it is usually made by rubbing the raw meat with a dry rub, then brining it, followed by smoking and/or steaming.
Sussman Volk of New York is said to have created the pastrami sandwich in 1887. A popular hot sandwich today, it is made with thin slices of pastrami, Thousand Island dressing, coleslaw, and Swiss cheese on rye or pumpernickel bread. The outside of the bread is buttered and the sandwich is cooked in a pan until golden brown on both sides.
