National Almond Day is February 16th.
The almond tree, native to the Middle East and South Asia, has fragrant pink and white flowers and bears a fleshy green fruit. The fruit is a drupe with a stone-like seed inside (similar to a peaches and cherries), the almond nut. It is not a true nut in the botanical sense.
Almonds are a popular snack food and may be eaten raw. A popular snack is smoked and salted almonds. Almond milk and almond butter are made from the extracted almond oil. Almond flour is a gluten-free alternative to wheat flour in cooking and baking. Popular almond treats include marzipan, macarons, Chinese almond cookies, and Italian ricciarelli.
Almonds are a rich source of vitamin E, dietary fiber, B vitamins, and essential minerals.
