child-flying-kiteBasant Panchami is the Festival of Spring celebrated in Haryana and Punjab, India in January or February. It is a time to say goodbye to winter and welcome spring.

Also known as Vasant Panchami, Saraswati Puja, Shree Panchami, or the Festival of Kites it is held on the fifth day of Magha (a month in the Hindu calendar).

On this day Hindus worship Saraswati Devi, the goddess of knowledge, music, art, and culture.

Yellow is the color of the day. Mustard fields are blooming with bright golden flowers. Statues of Sarasvati are dressed in yellow and worshiped. People dress in yellow clothing. Sweet saffron rice and yellow sweets are eaten.

Children fly kites this day, and the sky is filled with multicolored kites.

Forty day later is Holi.
