makes 36 cookies.
1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
1/3 cup vegetable shortening
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
sugar crystals in red and blue
Preheat oven to 350F.
Beat butter and shortening until blended.
Mix in sugar, baking powder and salt.
Mix in egg and vanilla.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Divide dough in half and roll one half to 1/8-1/4 inch thick. (Keep other piece of dough refrigerated.)
Cut out with star shaped cookie cutter.
Decorate with sugar crystals.
Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake 7-8 minutes or until edges are firm and lightly browned.
