Cakes and Ale Day

January 14: Cakes and Ale Day

Cakes and Ale Day

Cakes and Ale Day is held some parts of the UK. The phrase “cakes and ales” comes from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, “Dost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale?” It refers to good times and easy living. This is a good day to remember and celebrate the good things in your life. For fun, why not have some cakes and ale.

Note that there is a Cakes and Ale Ceremony held in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, It is in June on the Thursday before the 29th (St Peter’s Day). Town benefactor Jankyn Smith, who died in 1481, is remembered at St. Mary’s Church with a special service and the serving of cakes and ale.
