Gary Gygax Day was created in 2008 by the fans of Gary Gygax, the creator of the role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons. Gygax was born on July 27, 1938. He was an American game designer and author who is best known for co-creating the pioneering game Dungeons & Dragons with Dave Arneson.

Dungeons & Dragons, commonly referred to as D&D, is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game. It was first published in 1974 by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc., which Gygax co-founded. The game has been published by Wizards of the Coast (now a subsidiary of Hasbro) since 1997. The game was derived from miniature wargames, with a variation of the 1971 game Chainmail (a miniature wargame based on medieval warfare, which Gygax helped develop) serving as the initial rule system. This publication is commonly recognized as the beginning of modern role-playing games and the role-playing game industry.

Gygax designed numerous manuals such as Advanced Dungeons & Dragons as well as other role-playing games.
